Is Gold Approaching the $5,000 Milestone?
As noted in our previous gold analysis dated July 22, 2026, upside potential existed on the chart, and both targeted resistance levels were ultimately tested.
A Fundamental Perspective on Gold
Gold is currently supported by far more than mere geopolitical tensions; the market is simultaneously pricing in the trajectory of U.S. growth and employment, the path of real interest rates, inflation, and shifting structural global demand.
In the United States, relative labor market weakness has eased pressure for the continuation of a tight monetary policy; however, inflation remains an obstacle to a swift policy pivot by the Federal Reserve. Consequently, the primary catalyst for gold is not a single economic release or a solitary meeting, but rather the direction of real interest rates and the value of the U.S. dollar: slowing growth and a more accommodative monetary policy favor gold, whereas persistent inflation and high interest rates constitute the principal downside risks.
On the demand side, conditions remain supportive. Investment demand, particularly across Asia, is gaining prominence, while central banks continue to serve as a foundational pillar of gold demand aimed at reserve diversification and reducing concentration in traditional currency assets. Geopolitical tensions further reinforce this demand, albeit with the potential to fuel inflationary pressures via rising energy costs.
Ultimately, the core narrative for gold is no longer solely about "war" or a single economic data point; the tug-of-war between sluggish growth and employment on one side, and inflation, real interest rates, and the strength of the dollar on the other, dictates the fundamental trajectory of the market.
As long as real interest rates do not enter a sustained upward trend and investment demand alongside central bank purchases fails to experience a marked contraction, gold's fundamental outlook will remain constructive. The primary threat continues to be stubborn inflation that compels the Federal Reserve to maintain elevated interest rates.
Gold Price Action Analysis
During its decline from the $5,600 price peak, gold was halted from further downside upon reaching the $4,000–$4,100 support band, where it established a price floor.
The preceding weekly candle closed with bullish momentum, and buyers remain active. In light of the bullish cycle on the 8,3,3 Stochastic oscillator, further upside potential—albeit modest—persists over the course of upcoming candles.
Should the bullish structure hold, medium-term buyers eye targets such as $4,490, with an extended extension reaching up to $4,750, while the $5,000 target is pursued from a long-term perspective.
In the alternative bearish scenario—defined by the formation of a confirmed price peak on the daily timeframe followed by a sustained close of candles below the 8- and 21-period MAs on the 4H chart—prices retain the potential to retrace toward the $4,170 or $4,100 support levels.
